“The Faith is to believe what is the truth. God the Father who sent his Son, and the Spirit who gives life... But faith is also to trust in God, and THAT you must teach them, with your example, with your life...” - Pope Francis 1/8/17
Religious Education is the process by which we learn the basics about our Catholic Faith. And... it is an ongoing process!
Our education in the Christian Faith begins the moment a child witnesses the behavior of their parents and family members. It is at home where a child first learns to live by the Divine Law written on everyone's heart and soul. This Divine Law states, "Do unto others as you would have done unto you..."
Children know that lying, stealing and hurting others is wrong long before they are taught the 10 Commandments. They know these things are wrong because they wouldn't want someone lying, stealing or hurting them. Religious Education helps to expand on our innate knowledge to "do the right thing!"
Part of our formation in Christ is learning to have mercy and compassion on others just as we want God to have mercy and compassioin on us when we fall short of living according to His Wisdom and Commands.
God's Son, Jesus Christ was "Mercy Incarnate." Jesus was sent to earth to show us how to be in right-relationship with God our Father. Jesus then allowed himself to be a sin-offering for the forgiveness of our sins. And just as God the Father has bestowed mercy and forgiveness on us through His Son, He expects us to bestow mercy and forgiveness on others. This is how we become a true child of God. (Matthew 5:7; Matthew 18:32-35)
Children learn how to treat others by how their parent’s treat them -- and others. Formal classroom instruction helps to build on what a child learns at home and helps them to understand why we follow our Lord and Savior's example of how to love one another just as he loved us... (John 13:34)
Since we all come from different backgrounds, the Church in her wisdom realizes that some people’s formation in the Faith is different than others. This is why we provide people of all ages with various options to grow in the Faith.
At Holy Trinity Parish we have formal Summer and Winter classes for our young children. We also have a series of Family Events that take place throughout the year that all our parishioners are invited to attend. These Family Events are encouraged by our Bishop, Dennis Sullivan to be an opportunity for all of our parishioners to come together as the Family of God. Families who have young children in our Religious Education program are strongly encouraged to participate in at least six of these events.
For the adults in our parish, we also have Scripture Study Groups that form before Advent and Lent to discuss a specific topic.
For those who wish to become Catholic, we have the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA). These sessions are also for those Catholics who wish to update their faith.
For Parents who have recently given birth, we have Baptismal Preparation sessions. We also have six major “Prayer Groups” in our parish that enhance our baptismal commitment.
Another integral part of our formation in the Catholic Faith is attending Mass on a weekly basis. There is NO subsitution for missing the Holy Mass! The Mass was given to us by Jesus to "feed our soul" with his Holy Word, and his Holy Body and Blood.
The Mass is center of our Catholic Faith Experience. It is the time we come together as the Spiritual Family of God to worship and fellowship together. If we do not worship and learn from God on a weekly basis, we will find something other person, place or thing in the world to worship -- none of which can give us eternal life in Heaven!
The Sunday Mass is a time to "feed our soul" with the Word of God and the Holy Eucharist -- both of which contain the Divine Life of Christ! The Mass is also a sacred moment when we receive the Body and Blood of Christ in response to his command in Ch. 6 of John's record of the Gospel that, "... unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you..." (v53-54).
Obeying Christ's command is why Paragraph 2181 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
“The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on Days of Obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants). Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin...” (CCC 2181)
We should all look forward to visiting the House of the Lord each week to spend quality time with Him and our fellow Christians. Mass is a time for personal silence of the soul and a time to fully reconnect with Christ after a busy week. Jesus invites us to have a conversation with him over Sacred Scripture and then share a meal with us as himself as the main course! We cannot feel any closer to Christ than having his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity sustain our very life!
We hope you will consider furthering your education in the Catholic Faith. When it comes to Jesus Christ, "to know him is to love him!" And if everyone in the world loved one another as Christ loved us, there would be world peace. There isn't a another person in the history of the world who we can make that claim about!
